Today, we will be introducing our Operations Director. Please see below our interview withSteve Fuller.
Q1. When did you join Acuity?
'Way back in May 1996. I was just out of nappies obviously! I joined Lee as the first “techie” in a business full of Accountants, answering a job advert for a Jack of All Trades! Not sure I knew what I was letting myself in for but then again I’m not sure Lee, our CEO, did either! We started in a two room office above a Spar shop in Staines, so have come a long way since then. I turned up on a Saturday morning for interview not even knowing where Staines was. I guess I got the job because I made a good strong cup of tea, which was the first thing I had to do as part of the interview, it was either that or the fact I was the only person to respond to the Advert!
Over the years I think I’ve done almost every role within the business, maybe apart from Marketing!! I’ve had the blue screens of death when installing a new server on a Sunday Night, I’ve read the manual to try to configure a router without understanding what TCP IP was, and I’ve implemented an Accounting System without really understanding a Debit from a Credit at the time, but it has been a wonderful journey, and those experiences have helped me in recognising what we need to build the fantastic team we have, and continue to build here at Acuity.'
Q2. What is your role & key responsibilities?
'I still see myself as a bit of a Jack of All Trades to be honest. My Primary role is to take ultimate responsibility for the delivery of the implementation and support services that we provide for our customers. However, I also like to get involved with the Sales and Account Management teams so I am aware of what is coming and what our customers think of the services we provide, and I like to help out our Finance team if there are any queries that need resolving. I also still have one or two customers who I’ve personally worked with for many, many years so I like to keep my hand in, by doing some real work!
Recruitment also comes into my role, so I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t mention that we are always on the lookout for the Best People to join us here at Acuity. If you strive to be the best and work with the best in the Sage field, drop me an email or give me a call!'
Q3. In your opinion, what make’s Acuity different?
'I know it's what everyone says but the people make the biggest difference. The guiding principles of Acuity, Teamwork, Integrity, Enthusiasm and Innovation are truly reflected in each and every one of the colleagues I have here at Acuity. I’m very proud of the team that we have built, and would put our team, as a team, up against anyone, anywhere in the world in being able to provide the best of systems and services.
When I talk about people though I also include our customers. We all have our challenging customers but that’s what makes life interesting, and I always think it’s a pleasure to meet as many customers as I can on a monthly basis.
I’ve said for the past 22 years, that the week I get to a Sunday Evening and approach a Monday morning with a feeling of dread, is the week that I will pack it all in. I’m glad to say that day hasn’t come, and with the colleagues and customers we have around us, I hope it will be a long time coming!'
Q4. What are your key goals each month?
'Ensuring that our implementation and support teams deliver services of the highest quality to customers! Happy customers, happy colleagues!
I obviously always have one eye on the levels of utility across the implementation team and the other on the support logs, to ensure we are working at sensible levels within the business, but ultimately my goals are always to for our teams to deliver Referenceable Customers, by delivering Projects on Budget on and time!'
Q5. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
'As a father of 4 most of my spare time is spent running around after the family with my wonderful wife, Melanie. However, I still try to find time to for my first love by watching a few Everton games each season and most mornings can be found in the gym with a small group of mates, either taking in a spinning class or trying to knock some sense into each other by doing some boxing training. Like a few people here at Acuity I fancy myself as a bit of a Weekend Chef and would love to find the time to become a bit of a Wine Connoisseur. For now I’ll stick to the Real Ale!'
