What is SOX?

While the details of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act are complex, “SOX compliance” refers to the annual audit in which a public company is obligated to provide proof of accurate, data-secured financial reporting.

The Act that was passed in 2002 to restore confidence in financial reporting and protect investors from fraudulent activities. All publicly trading companies that do business in the US must comply with SOX and must be able to document, monitor and review internal accounting and auditing procedures, fully disclosing problems as they happen. Even for privately-held businesses – the best practices and controls set out by SOX can greatly benefit the company.
